A Ceilidh

Bonus Points if you know how to pronounce that without help ;)

*Hint* It's not pronounced the way it looks.

The University of Edinburgh is known for putting on plenty of ceilidhs for their students during the years.

So what is a Ceilidh?? And how do you Pronounce that word??

My Father asked for more videos because he found out how to work them after he found out how to find the blog.

First let me translate a little for these 2 ladies: at the end when they're talking about the men not wearing pants, they don't mean that the men are not wearing trousers (as they would call them here), but are referring to what men would be wearing underneath the kilt. This isn't completely true, because, as I hear it, men will sometimes wear pants during occasions when they are more likely to have people trying to look underneath their kilts.

So what is a Ceilidh? For reference, lets call it the Scottish version of a square dance! Not quite as ordered as having the 4 sets (although we did have a dance or two that required that type of configuration), but very similar in music style and having many of the steps called out (although for most after a couple times trough you were required to remember what you were doing).  We even did the Virginia Reel (yay! I knew one!!).

It's also a little more formal than a square dance (as everyone dressed nicely in nice dresses, and many of the men had kilts). And although drinking is a part of it, many drinks were spilled because they were left careless too close to the dance floor (which meant you had to be careful to not step in a sticky puddle).

Had a great time (and a few brushes with death thanks to particular dances that for some reason all seemed to involve swinging....) and am looking forward to the many more that the vet school in particular should be hosting. Also heard last night from a classmate that all of the vet schools in the UK get together in one city for a giant Ceilidh every year (and that this year may quite possibly be Liverpool??).  Well until then, I leave you with this last video that I think was filmed in a graveyard underneath the Edinburgh Castle...
